Day 258: Drawing William Shakespeare with Mick Manning and Brita Granström

Mick Manning and Brita Granström have now been collaborating together, sharing both illustration and text, for twenty two years. Their critically acclaimed books, published internationally and in many languages, mix words and images in all sorts of inventive and delightful ways.

In recent years, they have won the English Association Award for the fifth time with Charlie's War Illustrated. and have been shortlisted for the 2013 and 2014 ALMA prize. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is international and the largest children's literature prize in the world.

Their first book together won the Smarties Silver Prize in 1996. Since then they have won the Times Education Supplement Award, received five Royal Society Junior Science Book prizes and have won The English Association Non-Fiction Award in: 2000, 2005, 2008, 2011 and most recently in 2014 with a book about Mick's grandfather, Charlie's war Illustrated. Their book about Mick's father Tail-End Charlie has been shortlisted for the Blue Peter Book Awards, the ALCS award and was nominated for the Carnegie Medal. 

Other nice things that have happened to their books include Mick's book A Ruined House being chosen as one of Quentin Blake's fifty all-time favorites in his book The Laureate's Party, and being invited to contribute illustrations, alongside others, to both The Birthday Book (in aid of the Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts) and We Are All Born Free (The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in pictures for Amnesty International).

Recent books include: The Story of Britain, Wild Adventures, Charlie's War Illustrated, The Secrets of Stonehenge (nominated for the 2014 SLA awards) and The Beatles (a biography of the band that changed the world, set against the social revolution of the 1960s), received a half page colour review in The New York Times by David Browne, an editor of Rolling Stone magazine.

Their backlist includes books endorsed by and made in collaboration with: The IWM, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Bletchley Park Museum, The Wildlife Trusts, The Natural History Museum and English Heritage.
