Day 231: Drawing a Zombie with Joe McGee and Charles Santoso

Who's Joe McGee?

Well, it depends on who you ask, doesn't it?

They'll tell you that I write stories for kids, young and old - picture books, middle-grade, young adult, you name it.

Some people might tell you that I am a graduate of the Vermont College of Fine Arts' Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program, that I also have a Master of Arts in Writing from Rowan University.

Some may tell you that I teach writing at Rowan University.

Some may say that I've led a platoon in the U.S. Army, that I jumped out of airplanes, driven tanks, and lived out of my rucksack in the mountains of Korea.

They may tell you that I've climbed a volcano, skated halfpipes, flown small, fix-winged aircraft, hiked glacial ponds and watched shooting stars race across cloudless skies.

They might also claim that I've played bass guitar and published cartoons and won awards for fiction and poetry and essays I've written. They might whisper that I loathe mayonnaise and love cheese and that my mother was bitten by a spider monkey when she was pregnant with me.

They will tell you that I have three wonderful sons.

They might add that I read voraciously and smile a lot and dream and laugh and live and love and write a lot . . . boy, do I write a lot.

And they would all be right

Charles Santoso (Chao) loves drawing little things in his little journal and dreaming about funny, wondrous stories. He gathers inspiration from his childhood memories and curiosities he discovers in his everyday travels.

He has illustrated several picture books, including I don’t Like Koala – written by Sean Ferrell, Spy Guy: The Not-So-Secret Agent – written by Jessica Young and Peanut Butter & Brains – written by Joe McGee.

During the day he works at an animation studio as a concept artist/art director and has been involved in various animated feature film and tv commercial projects.

Charles Santoso’s work has been exhibited in Sydney and also internationally in North America and France. He currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
