Day 152: Drawing Froggy with Frank Remkiewicz
Frank was born in Rockville, CT and grew up in nearby Hartford. After a 4-year Naval enlistment he attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, receiving a BPA with honors in 1965. He began his art career as a freelance illustrator in New York City, working for a variety of clients. In 1968, he joined the the staff of Norcross Greeting Cards, creating artwork for gift cards, gift wrap and humorous booklets.
In 1973, he and his family moved backed to Northern California while freelancing once again, this time for greeting card companies and educational publishers. In 1989, a chance interview landed a contract to illustrate Horrible Harry in Room 2B, by Suzy Kline for Viking Children’s Books.
Froggy Gets Dressed, by Jonathan London, soon followed and these two series eventually accounted for over forty of the more than 100 children’s trade books Frank has illustrated to date – 14 of which Frank authored himself.
Today, Frank is married, has three daughters and five grandchildren. He and his wife, Sylvia Nissley, an independent curator, live on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
